The hustle and bustle of the city is exciting for anyone of any age, offering loads of things to do for both children and adults. Whether the children are visiting Auntie or it’s a road trip to a new city together, a nearby or far-away metropolis offers lots of ways keep everyone happy.
1. Theater and Shows
Acting on stage, and not on a screen, is something most kids don’t get to see a lot of – and what an experience for them! A big city show may spark their imagination while inspiring them with the arts. A recent study out the University of Arkansas found “that seeing plays is an effective way to teach academic content; increases student tolerance by providing exposure to a broader, more diverse world; and improves the ability of students to recognize what other people are thinking or feeling.
2. The Zoo
Kids love animals so this is a great way to spend time with your nieces or nephews while you can all enjoy what a local zoo has to offer. A visit to the zoo creates environmental and wildlife awareness for children; children learn about different animals and the kind of settings they need to live in to thrive. Some zoos even have a place for children to pet and feed some of the animals.
3. Amusement Parks
Some cities offer amusement parks, a great way and to stay active have a great time. You’ll be able to find out just what rides your little niece or nephew enjoys, and maybe even convince them to try something new. And believe it or not, there are many health benefits to visiting a theme park, including lots of walking.
4. Fishing
City fishing? Yes! Instead of just taking a regular boat ride, you and your nieces and nephews can do a boat ride and fishing combination. Fishing helps children develop their balance and coordination, not to mention their patience. Fishing doesn’t always come easy!
5. Parks and Picnics
On a beautiful spring day, a walk through the park is nothing short of wonderful! Plus, scientists have found that walking through nature has a positive impact on memory and disposition, in both children and in adults. Pack up a basket beforehand, find a nice spot on the grass, and enjoy a delightful lunch.
6. Museums
It's no surprise that museums offer a lot to learn and see for both children and adults. From history museums, to art museums, science museums, and museums designed specifically for children, there are plenty of benefits to be found. Need more convincing? 7. Miniature Golf
This sport is fun for all, and really helps kids develop various skills, from eye-hand coordination, timing, even physics. Plus, a little friendly competition teaches them a lot about managing losing and winning.
8. Boat Rides and Tours
Whether it’s a small paddleboat or a bigger boat ride across the river, you can all enjoy a little quiet time on the water while getting a tour of the city from a far.
9. Bike Rides
Some city tours include bike rides. Whether you want to show your niece and nephew around yourself, or go along with a tour, a bike ride around the city is a fantastic way to stay active while also seeing the sights. Bike riding builds up strength, control, and endurance. Instead of walking, you’re able to get your adrenaline pumping and stop anywhere you’d like along the way.
10. Outdoor Concerts
In both bigger and smaller cities, it’s easy to find outdoor concerts and many are free. It’s a great chance to hear some live music and discover musicians. Scientists have found that concerts help develop a child’s rhythm and can be very important motivators for kids interested in learning more about music and playing instruments.
