Aunt-Hood

First time aunt. Terrified! What to expect?

Hi! New to both this website and to Aunt-Hood! I only have one sibling, my older sister. She's pregnant for the first time, and I'm soooo happy! I want to be there for them, but I don't want to seem to pushy or anything. What can I do? How can I help?

Also, she's Agnostic and her boyfriend is Atheist but I'm Baptist. Religious parents teach religion, Atheist parents teach atheism. I won't talk about religion or anything to kid when he/she is bigger (I know that already.) But has anyone ever been in that situation?

Religious parents don't always teach their children religion. My parents are catholic and I am an Atheist and they have learned to accept that. . But I do have a similar situation. I am an Atheist and my brothers mother-in-law is a Mormon. My brother and his wife want my nephew to be raised in an open environment where when my nephew gets older he has the freedom to choose. But talk to your sister about it see if she is comfortable with her child learning about other religions too.

As for being a first time Auntie. I was 15 when my nephew was born and I had no clue what would happen to me. It just came naturally. Tell your sister that you are there for whatever she needs and make sure she can depend on you. Like instead of toys I got them diapers and formula. I now at 18 am about to be an Auntie for the 4th time. Just follow your instincts and make sure to let your sister know that you care.

Atheist parents don't really teach atheism, they just don't take their child to church and they don't tell them to pray. It's more of an absence of God rather than teaching against God. (I'm not atheist, but a very good friend is)

For the first few years, the baby isn't going to have any concept of God or religion, anyway - so don't sweat it! This is an example of just living what you believe and letting that be the teacher. If your sister feels you're forcing your believes on her child, that might cause problems. Live what you believe, love the baby, and everything will be okay!

HI! Well I haven't been in your situation as to the varied religions but I do know one thing. If you are Baptist then I am assuming you are a Christian. Christianity and Atheism/Agnosticism cannot both be right. One has to be right and the other wrong whether people believe it or not and whether they like it or not. Just deciding not to believe something does not make it true. So,seeing as eternity is the most important thing your new sweet little niece or nephew will need to be prepared to deal with and even your sister and her boyfriend for that matter, then you would want to lovingly work out a way TO talk about it with them, not ignore it or leave it out. I am not saying you force your beliefs. I am saying that you care enough to appeal to their conscience and so they are at least more aware that they are making a choice that will matter to them one day. Being an aunt is an important responsibility but it is also very much fun, enjoy it!
