Gifts for Special Occassions

I live in Alberta and my nephews lives in BC; needless to say, we don't see each other often. To make up for the lack of time we get to spend together, I send him smalls gifts for each occassion - Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween, Birthday, and Christmas. It's typically something small (to avoid expensive shipping costs) like a shirt and a book that goes with the occassion. I also send small gifts on Mother's Day and Father's Day to my brother and sister in law which is typically something for him anyway (like "Me and My Dad" book or a "I Love My Mommy" onsie.)

Does anyone else do this? If so, I'd love to hear where you shop and other creative gift ideas :)

Since I own my own business I make my niece items for each holiday. But I also buy her little things too. Just wherever I find things. Like you said, nothing big. Just small things on holidays like Valentine's Day, Halloween, and other holidays. I also plan to get my sister something for Mother's Day (her first Mother's Day). So I'm totally with you on this!

Deanne, I love your idea of sending small gifts including books and clothes and I totally understand the pain of shipping costs! You didn't mention the age of your nephews but I think anything that shows you are thinking of him is wonderful. In addition to the books you've mentioned, maybe some classics so he can start building a library and you can read together - Ferdinand, Guess How Much I love You, Where the Wild Things Are to name a few.

If they are older (5-8) then I love Dragon Slayer's Academy books.

Even Older, Harry Potter are wonderful as are Rohl Dahl books - Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The Witches, The BFG and they are delightfully creepy.

A fun twist on sending these books is maybe you can set up some Facetime / skype session and you read to them. You can get your own copy of the book at the library, send them a copy to read along and voila - a fun, shared experience (and ps it gives mom and dad a little quiet time!).

I'm spoiled; my niece and nephew live less than 15 min away... but I still like to show up with a book, a movie, or a craft when we have auntie au pair time.

Now that they are getting older (and they got tablets for Christmas), we've started playing games on-line together. My Liege and I play Scrabble and Princess Peanut and I play Draw Something.

Princess Peanut also enjoys any excuse to Skype...her big brother kinda yawns...

I earlier used to shop at Etsy.com but now this new shop that has caught my fancy is Fab.com

They have got some really unique items for gifting purposes. My sister lives down in New York and I regularly shop from there for her.

My sister is celebrating 10 years of marriage soon and I'm planning to get my nephews for a day, so they can celebrate their togetherness without the kids. Does anyone have suggestions for a 5 year old's birthday? My nephew is turning 5 and definitely doesn't need toys or clothes. He hasn't said he wants anything, and while I've given he and his brother fun science kits before, they still have a couple they haven't opened yet. He's about to start T-K. I want to give him a special gift certificate for a trip to the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, but I'm not sure he'll understand it.

Hi, BruinGirl,

This year for my 5 year-old niece's birthday I wrote and illustrated a book for her. She absolutely loved it! I've decided to do this for my other nieces and nephews as they grow up.

Most recently I published a book called Yummy Haiku: Fruits and Veggies, ABC's and Zen which will be a gift for my youngest niece. (This book is available on Blurb.com for only $8.99 if you're interested *wink*)

There are also websites out there that allow you to input your nephew's name/info and a personalized storybook is generated. Since it sounds like he is interested in science, maybe you could find a book with a scientific theme to personalize for him?
