Holiday List is Getting TOO LONG

My friends and I always traded gifts at the holidays and as they started to have children, I got little things for the kids as well. Now that the kids (8 of them) are getting older (they range from 6 months - 6 years now), my wallet is taking a beating.

Spending upwards of $250 for the 8 kids and their 4 moms (on top of my immediate family) is just no longer practical for me. I don't know to address this.

Would it be bad form for me suggest just buying for the kids? Or not buying for the kids and just buying for my mom friends?

Am I crazy? Am I a bad ABC?

What should I do?

My family has a nice, non offensive rule (I think). When you have kids you stop receiving gifts. That way you can transfer the funds you were allocating for the moms to the kids instead.

I would suggest that you tell her that you cant afford to buy for everyone anymore. I'm sure she will understand. As we get older, our list of loved ones gets longer!

I agree with lyss. Just be honest. Tell your friends that you just can not afford to buy so many presents anymore. I would ask them if they would prefer you bought them a present, or the kids a present, or if you all just give up presents altogether and have a get-together instead. I'm sure now that they have kids some of them are finding finances a bit tight, so they might appreciate you bringing it up so they don't have to get you a gift anymore.

We only get gifts for family, our friends just receive cards in the mail (and that's expensive enough).

When this happened to me, I spoke with them about it. Mutual decision... I buy a lovely Christmas decoration for each family. They become special mementoes... And every year, we talk about them with interest and special memory...
