I know one mother who saved a favorite piece of clothing from her children, when they had outgrown them, cut squares from them, and made a quilt so when her kids moved out of the house, they left with this memory childhood quilt. I do a Christmas ornament each year for my niece and nephew... which was something my parents did for each of us. That way, when we moved out and had trees of our own, we had 20+ special ornaments with which to decorate it.

I am an auntie to a 2 year old nephew. I have also been giving ornaments - and inscribing the year on the back - something that my mother had done for me since I was a child. I have ornaments that are 30+ years old and am glad to be continuing the tradition!
