I'm an Auntie by Choice AND by Relation

I fit into both of these categories. My brother has two little boys, but they live all the way in Las Vegas (I'm in NYC) so I spend more of my Auntie days as an ABC to my friends' kids. Just this week I was Tanta (Aunt in Yiddish I think) Susanne to my friend Ali's son and got to babysit him when they were in town for a visit. I hate feeling closer to my friends' kids than my brother's. Anyone have any advice when it comes to being a good long-distance Auntie?

I did that when they were younger, especially with the oldest. Everyone spoils the first nephew all that much more. In NYC theres vendors everywhere selling treasures on street corners. The best I got him was one of those street paintings with his name (Joshua) on it. I think thats still up in his room. Thanks for the tip. I think I do some more little things like that!

It's tough feeling disconnected from your nephews! Maybe try setting up regular video calls just to chat, even if it's short. My nieces love seeing my apartment and hearing about what I'm up to in NYC. You could also send little care packages or even play online games together. If they're into cars, you might even enjoy playing something simple like Drift Hunters online to bond. Don't beat yourself up though; life is busy! Just keep trying to connect in small ways.
