10 Simple Ways to Redecorate with Auntie!
Are you ready for a summer makeover with your niece or nephew? Here are ten ideas for you, any one of which can instantly change a space – and they are not expensive either. So get together with your niece or nephew and decide together which one will be your special summer project.
Paint
Painting is the most inexpensive way to change a room. All the more fun if you do it yourselves. Prep the walls first by covering up those nicks and cracks with spackle. Sand and then apply the paint. Tip: Get good quality paint-with-primer in one. You may spend more on the paint, but you will save time by only having to apply two coats instead of three.
Pillows and Bedding
Changing the pillows and bedding can also make a statement - but not “matchy-matchy.” For a more interesting look, mix and match textures and patterns. Let your niece or nephew have fun with choices – as long as the colors go well together!
Organize
You would be surprised at what your nephew’s or niece’s room will look like when you clean up all that clutter. Suddenly, the space will feel new again.
Accessories
Try changing the room’s accessories to add character and a pop of color. I won’t get into detail here, but check out my post on accessories, and have fun shopping!
Moldings
Architectural details always make a room more interesting. But choose something simple so that your niece and nephew will not get tired of it.
Flooring
New flooring can be the most expensive change of all. But is your niece’s or nephew’s house mid-century? Often, that old shaggy carpet has beautiful untouched wood floors underneath it! Pull up the carpet inside the closet to see what is underneath – you may be surprised.
Window Treatments
Simple wood blinds are one of my favorites. They are inexpensive, provide a clean look and are easy to install. Save yourself the headache of having to worry about child safety, and get the cordless upgrade for your niece’s or nephew’s room. It costs only a little bit more and is well worth it!
Wall Art
Not sure about what to do with that huge wall in your nephew’s or niece’s room? How about some wall art? Hire an artist to paint a mural – or better yet, are you artistic? Paint one with your niece or nephew. You can also find great peel-and-stick wall decals online. The good thing about these is they easily peel off the wall when your niece or nephew outgrows the design.
Lighting
A light fixture adds so much character. If it is in the middle of the room, make sure there is about seven feet between the floor and the bottom of the fixture. You don’t want anyone hitting their head on your niece’s beautiful chandelier!
Doors and Hardware
Yes, I know, it sounds crazy, but small details can have the biggest impact. Change the doors and order some nice hardware, including matching hinges. Then get some whimsical knobs for the dresser – what a statement!
