Mrs. Claus: A Savvy Auntie to All the Children
By Fiona Hurley
At this time of year, we should bear tribute to
the woman without whom Christmas would not be the same. Santa Claus gets
the credit, but he would not be able to achieve his great work without
the help of his wife.
Mary
Claus (maiden name Christmas) married late in life to her great love,
Santa. They never had children of their own, but they have more than
made up for this with the joy that they bring to children worldwide.
Although Santa answers the letters and rides the sleigh around the world
on Christmas Eve, it’s Mrs. Claus who is the organizing brain behind
the great North Pole enterprise. She chooses and wraps presents,
organizes the elves, and feeds the reindeer.
When
the seasonal stress gets too much for Santa, she helps him to stay
focused, sometimes with the help of her famous homemade cookies.
(Occasionally, they both plan to go on a diet, but that never lasts
long.) It’s Mrs. Claus who manages the toy inventory and keeps track of
the naughty-and-nice list (she’s a dab hand with a spreadsheet).
So,
as our nieces and nephews write their letters to Santa, ask them to
spare a line of thanks for Mrs. Claus, the Savviest Auntie of them all!
