Does Your Nephew Have Gynecomastia?
Sometimes, as boys get older, they develop enlarged male breasts, which is called Gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can be found with one breast, or both. An examination by your nephew’s physician may reveal fat, glandular tissue, or a combination of both.
What we do know is that frequently, gynecomastia can cause emotional stress and embarrassment for boys.
What causes gynecomastia?
Enlarged male breasts may be the result of hormonal changes, genetics, certain diseases, medications, or drugs. During puberty with hormonal changes, boys may temporarily develop gynecomastia. Individuals that are overweight are encouraged to lose weight and the fatty breast tissue. But unfortunately, most of the time, the exact cause is not known.
What are your nephew’s options?
Surgery is usually deferred until after a thorough physical examination and an appropriate medical evaluation. Frequently, adolescent boys need to wait at least two years for breast development to stabilize.
Surgical options include liposuction, direct excision of gynecomastia, or a combination of excision and liposuction. Patients need to be in good health, have realistic expectations, and understand that recurrence is possible. Like all procedures, there are risks involved and this should be addressed at your nephew’s consultation.
