The Uncle's Reading Room
Books. They transport and connect us. They educate and entertain us. And for nieces and nephews who might be starting out reading, books make a great vehicle for building a strong bond with your favorite loved ones.
Many summers ago, one of my uncles was the dean of the English department at a major university. When we’d visit him, the time revolved around storytelling and the written word. In many cases—especially during holiday gatherings—he’d read his most recent work to the family and we’d all be enthralled.
From those experiences, I learned the power of writing and reading. Now, as an uncle, I try to build upon this lesson. Specifically by sharing books, magazines and even comics with my nephews and nieces.
You need not have had an uncle/professor or even been a great reader or writer. To share the excitement of books and reading, all you need to do is open the door. Here are three quick ways to provide learning opportunities to your nieces and nephews while still being the fun uncle.
1. First, share the types of books you liked to read at their age.
The authors have changed, but the genres are the same. You might not get Nancy Drew or Enclyclopedia Brown in their hands, but it’s easy to find popular and fun, safe reading for kids. Ask at your local book store or read reviews on Amazon to learn more. Then, get a book or two for your nieces and nephews to enjoy.
2. Next, read with them, NOT to them.
It might be fun to even have your nieces and nephews read to you or tell you about what’s going on in their latest book. Regardless, whenever you’ve set up some time to visit, try to have one of your own books handy. Then you and your favorite relatives can spend some time reading together and then share what you’ve read.
3. Finally, think about expanding the reading experience.
Ask nieces and nephews to try and write their own books and share them with you. Their time spent reading will inform their ability to craft stories and you will both benefit from the connection.
In fact, I’d be surprised if some of them don’t decide to take up writing as a profession. Just like I did after years of having my uncle share his love for literature with me.
