Topic: Coping and Connections

I was awakened Labor Day morning from a phone call from my 36 year old pregnant niece. She lives some 300 miles away and is 4 1/2 months pregnant. I was delighted to hear that she is well although having food "cravings". She is very concerned about weight gain since she lost over 100 lbs several years ago. I tried to be supportive and tell her that all pregnant women have increased desire for food and gaining weight is normal and expected! She is beginning to set up a nursery and I can't wait to go there to see what she and her husband are planning. They are exploring Alexander as a baby name although they won't know the child's sex until Sept. 10. She is a last semester student at the University of Texas-Dallas and will finish in December. I am SO proud of her. She has struggle for years and is finally seeing the results of her hard work. She is a dear person to me and I am fortunate to have her as a niece.

UPDATE Sept. 10: It's a girl! David and Susan's parents met for dinner to hear the "big reveal". They called me on the phone. Forget Alexander and think Anna! We could not be more excited.

I spent last weekend with my niece and her husband. They moved into a new apartment to have room for Baby Anna when she makes her appearance in early February. It is so much fun to anticipate a great-niece! They have registered for gifts and have picked out the loveliest decor for the baby's room. I feel so good being able to help get them settled although they will have to call me every so often to ask where I put the tupperware!

Baby Anna is due in 7 weeks. She's getting big! They let me purchase the "travel system." I had no idea there were so many options. I finally told them to pick it out and I'd order it. I know they will get it soon since the delivery folks are ramped up for Christmas. Susan will participate in graduatuation from UT Dallas on December 20. She's worried that her grad gown won't fit around her. I advised her to be "pregnant and proud" and leave the gown open if it dosen't go around her. She's the first in her family to graduate from college so I am excited for her! It will be a big day.

I attended the baby shower in Dallas. Wow, I had no idea there were that many cute, pink garments for a baby! I was so pleased that Susan got so many nice things for Anna. The due date has been moved to Jan. 29. The nursery is complete and excitement is increasing. Meantime, I finished a craft project of embroidering around a hand-print of 6 yr. old Madelyn and 4 yr. old Jake. They are big enough that I had to use two embroidery hoops which I painted red. I did a set for my sister and one for my mom, the Great Granny!
